Collections Officer
RCS is the professional body for surgery. Our mission is to build the future of the surgical profession and improve the delivery of surgical care. We do this through education, training, examination, supporting surgical research and providing support and advice for surgeons at all stages of their careers.
About the role
The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) wishes to appoint a Collections Officer.
The Collections Officer works across multiple sites to support the functions of the Museums Department, part of the Learning and Quality Directorate. The Museum collections include historically significant ACE Designated collections and modern Human Tissue Authority (HTA) licenced material. This is an exciting opportunity to work with the RCS museum collections. The Collections Officer will play a key role in the preparation and decant of the museum collections as part of redevelopment of the RCS buildings. They will undertake various aspects of collection management and care. This includes packing and moving collections, object cataloguing and location and movement control.

Collections Officer

Cataloguing Internship
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, this appointment is being temporarily suspended and will be reposted on the University of Cambridge Museum’s webpage when we know more.
We are recruiting! Funding has become available, through the University of Cambridge Museums, for a three month Internship with the University Museum of Zoology.
The purpose of this internship is to assist with the auditing, cataloguing and labelling of approximately 200 cichlid fish collected in Lake Malawi in 2017 and subsequently donated to the museum.

Summer Science Intern - Enhancing Kew's spirit collections
As an intern, during your placement, you will help to deliver Kew’s mission by participating in and providing support to the activities within the Science Directorate. You will receive training in key research skills from Kew’s leading experts and gain valuable practical and professional experience. You will also have access to Kew’s world-renowned collections of plants and fungi, its library and research facilities. Interns contribute to the research activities of a specific team, aligned with the Kew Science Strategy 2015-2020. You will probably either be an undergraduate or recent graduate studying biosciences, bioinformatics, computer science or a subject related to this project. You’ll be able to demonstrate an interest in biodiversity, its sustainable use and conservation. You’ll also have an operating knowledge of word-processing, spreadsheet and/or database software together with experience of data collection and analysis and report writing. Collections Assistant
The University Museum of Zoology, Cambridge is inviting applications for a full-time Collections Assistant to assist in the maintenance and organisation of the collections following the Museum's recent transformative redevelopment. Collections still in nearby storage in the need to be assessed, processed and brought back to the museum stores.
This work will uncover new untold stories behind these "hidden" collections, enabling the Museum team to communicate to the public the nature of working behind the scenes, the thrill of new discoveries, and the specific challenges of zoological collections. Our goal is to ensure that the collections are both appropriately stored and made physically and intellectually accessible: to researchers, students, stakeholders and audiences in Cambridge and worldwide.
You will have experience working with museum collections, good oral and written communication skills, demonstrable IT proficiency and good manual dexterity for object handling.

Senior Curator (History) and Senior Curator (Natural History & Technology)

To be successful in this role you have the following skills and experience:
- Degree or equivalent experience in a relevant subject area
- Excellent understanding of the needs of audiences, especially those who do not regularly visit museums
- Demonstrate experience of using collections to develop content and interpretation for diverse audiences within a museum context.
- Ability to work in partnership with other organisations, including community organisations

Collections Officer
As part of a redevelopment project, the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) seeks to appoint a Collections Officer to support the preparation and move of the RCS museum collections. The museum collections comprise of organic specimens, surgical instruments, artworks, models and microscope slides. They include historically significant ACE Designated collections and modern Human Tissue Authority (HTA) licenced material.
The Collections Officer will work across multiple sites. They will be responsible for various aspects of collections management and collections care. This includes object cataloguing, packing and movement of collections and location and movement control, using ADLIB Collections Management System. The post-holder will hold a degree in a relevant subject and have demonstrable experience of working with museum collections. They will have a good understanding of museums documentation and experience of using collections databases. Importantly they will have the sensitivity and confidence needed to work with specimens of human tissue and ensure that Human Tissue Authority standards are adhered to.
Director of Biodiversity Banking - Institute for Conservation Research

We are specifically seeking candidates with experience managing cryopreservation systems who possess the scientific training preparing them to conduct collection management research and to curate preserved biological collections of plants and animals, as well as skills to develop and manage the Biodiversity Banking team as an enterprising, service-oriented unit. A background that includes a strong understanding of cryobiology, cell biology, tissue culture, gamete preservation, and/or seed banking as well as curation and collection management is desirable.
This position marks Biodiversity Banking’s establishment as an independent unit within the San Diego Zoo’s Institute for Conservation Research and presents opportunities to collaborate with a dynamic research team that includes Community Engagement, Conservation Genetics, Disease Investigations, Plant Conservation, Population Sustainability, Reproductive Sciences, and Recovery Ecology. We are the largest zoo-based, multidisciplinary research and wildlife conservation team in the world and are currently engaged in projects in more than 40 countries benefitting over 100 species.
The successful candidate will oversee the current five-person team and the Frozen Zoo® facilities at the Beckman Center for Conservation Research in Escondido, California, and at the San Diego Zoo. The initial expectation is to adapt the existing group into an independent unit supporting scientific research of other Institute teams while developing a productive new program dedicated to improving the science of cryopreservation and biobank collection management.
