The African Natural History Research Trust (ANHRT) is a charitable research trust and museum focused on African entomological biodiversity. Our research is aimed at increasing the scientific knowledge of African insects with an emphasis on Lepidoptera.

Working as part of a small team, this role requires an organised individual with experience of working with Lepidoptera collections. The successful candidate will be capable of conducting self and group-led taxonomic research and have a strong understanding of zoological nomenclature. The successful candidate will be proficient at disseminating their findings through scientific journals and other scientific outlets, identifying and recurating parts of the collections as required whilst ensuring collections are safeguarded in line with ANHRT collections management protocol.

We welcome applicants with a broad understanding of Lepidopteran taxa. Candidates with specific knowledge of the following Heteroceran families would be preferable but candidates with expertise in other families will also be considered: Noctuidae, Erebidae, Lasiocampidae, Bombycidae, Limacodidae and/or Microlepidoptera.

Essential Competencies:
• Relevant undergraduate degree
• A proven ability to initiate and complete relevant research projects with national and international collaborations
• Previous experience of undertaking scientific research projects. This can be working as part of a team or individually.
• Draft publications and prepare them for submission to refereed journals
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• A clear understanding of taxonomy and a knowledge of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature
• An ability to organise multiple assignments with minimal supervision and in response to deadlines
• A high level of attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy. This will be coupled with an excellent level of manual dexterity.
• A proven ability to undertake specimen dissections and genitalia preparations
• A full driving license and own car
Preferable Competencies:
• Relevant PhD or equivalent work experience
• Specialist knowledge of Noctuidae, Erebidae, Lasiocampidae, Bombycidae or Microlepidoptera
• A willingness to travel in the UK and abroad for short or long periods as required.

The Sedgwick Museum is currently undertaking a major relocation of its rock collections (approximately 12,000 drawers, 400,000 specimens) from the Atlas Building at High Cross, Cambridge to the Museum’s new purpose-built geological collection store adjacent to the Museum’s AG Brighton Building on Madingley Rise. The move is led by the Collections Manager with support from the Collections team and is estimated to take at least 15 months. The Collections Project Assistant role will provide essential support to that team during the move, and enable volunteers to contribute effectively to the project.

The Collections Project Assistant will provide practical and organisational support to the Collections Manager during the relocation of the geological collections. They will ensure that the collections are relocated and documented with a high degree of accuracy and timeliness, and will motivate volunteers to contribute to the same goals. The Collections Project Assistant will carry out essential documentation and collections care, under the guidance of the Museum’s Collections Manager and the Conservator, transporting pallet loads of specimen drawers between buildings using a 3.5T box van with tail lift. They will contribute to public and stakeholder engagement both face-to-face, by giving tours and other activities, and online through blogs and social media.

The collections of the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences are some of the most important geological collections in the world, comprising more than two million fossils, rocks and minerals representing 300 years of collecting, from Enlightenment Cabinets of Curiosities to specimens collected in the field by some of today’s leading researchers. The Museum welcomes more than 150,000 public visitors a year and delivers popular public programmes and outreach. A background that includes a strong understanding of cryobiology, cell biology, tissue culture, gamete preservation, and/or seed banking as well as curation and collection management is desirable.

This position marks Biodiversity Banking’s establishment as an independent unit within the San Diego Zoo’s Institute for Conservation Research and presents opportunities to collaborate with a dynamic research team that includes Community Engagement, Conservation Genetics, Disease Investigations, Plant Conservation, Population Sustainability, Reproductive Sciences, and Recovery Ecology. We are the largest zoo-based, multidisciplinary research and wildlife conservation team in the world and are currently engaged in projects in more than 40 countries benefitting over 100 species.

The successful candidate will oversee the current five-person team and the Frozen Zoo® facilities at the Beckman Center for Conservation Research in Escondido, California, and at the San Diego Zoo. PRIMARY PURPOSE

QUALIFICATIONS

Our collection is made up of approximately 250 species of fish, invertebrates (aquatic & terrestrial), amphibians and plants.

We are looking for Aquarists to join our busy aquarium team in caring for our diverse living collections through display maintenance, livestock feeding, maintaining life support systems, conducting water testing, updating computerised records and answering queries from the public, all to the highest possible standard.

You'll ideally have an aquatic biological qualification, and will have maintained aquaria in a public aquarium, museum or zoo setting.

You'll have proven experience of running successful tropical coral systems, with a knowledge of coral propagation and husbandry, and water chemistry management.

It would be an advantage to hold a Dive Master or equivalent certificate.

One Collection will revolutionise public access to one of the most significant scientific collections in the world. In spring 2019 construction began at the National Collections Centre in Wiltshire on a new home for more than 300,000 historic items from the Science Museum Group Collection. This will transform how we manage, care for and share our collection with the world, ensuring these historic objects continue to inspire future generations. From 2023 this building will open regularly for public tours, school and research visits, providing unprecedented public access to this incredible collection.

As Collections Moves Manager you will maintain, coordinate and enhance the delivery of the sub-project to digitise and pack objects at our Blythe House site ahead of their move into the NCC. Working closely with colleagues, you will lead the teams delivering the core collections moves workflow: Inventory, Hazard Surveyors, Photography, Conservation & Collections Care, and Packing. With the exception of packing, which started this year, the workflows started in April 2018. Each team is also supported and trained by specialist colleagues for their discipline and you will liaise closely with other managers. You will also liaise with the Curatorial team in London and wider Collections Services team at Blythe House and the NCC and ensure collaborative work.

In this role you will ensure that these tasks are carried out in a safe and secure manner to comply with current legislation and following best professional practice. You will be aware of hazard management procedures associated with historic objects and have a good knowledge of Health and Safety.
