As an intern, during your placement, you will help to deliver Kew’s mission by participating in and providing support to the activities within the Science Directorate. You will receive training in key research skills from Kew’s leading experts and gain valuable practical and professional experience. You will also have access to Kew’s world-renowned collections of plants and fungi, its library and research facilities. Interns contribute to the research activities of a specific team, aligned with the Kew Science Strategy 2015-2020. You will probably either be an undergraduate or recent graduate studying biosciences, bioinformatics, computer science or a subject related to this project. You’ll be able to demonstrate an interest in biodiversity, its sustainable use and conservation. You’ll also have an operating knowledge of word-processing, spreadsheet and/or database software together with experience of data collection and analysis and report writing. The University Museum of Zoology, Cambridge is inviting applications for a full-time Collections Assistant to assist in the maintenance and organisation of the collections following the Museum's recent transformative redevelopment. As part of a redevelopment project, the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) seeks to appoint a Collections Officer to support the preparation and move of the RCS museum collections. The museum collections comprise of organic specimens, surgical instruments, artworks, models and microscope slides. The Collections Officer will work across multiple sites. They will be responsible for various aspects of collections management and collections care. This includes object cataloguing, packing and movement of collections and location and movement control, using ADLIB Collections Management System. The post-holder will hold a degree in a relevant subject and have demonstrable experience of working with museum collections.  They will have a good understanding of museums documentation and experience of using collections databases.  Importantly they will have the sensitivity and confidence needed to work with specimens of human tissue and ensure that Human Tissue Authority standards are adhered to.

A background that includes a strong understanding of cryobiology, cell biology, tissue culture, gamete preservation, and/or seed banking as well as curation and collection management is desirable.

This position marks Biodiversity Banking’s establishment as an independent unit within the San Diego Zoo’s Institute for Conservation Research and presents opportunities to collaborate with a dynamic research team that includes Community Engagement, Conservation Genetics, Disease Investigations, Plant Conservation, Population Sustainability, Reproductive Sciences, and Recovery Ecology. We are the largest zoo-based, multidisciplinary research and wildlife conservation team in the world and are currently engaged in projects in more than 40 countries benefitting over 100 species.

Job Purpose
To develop, care for, encourage and facilitate the use and interpretation of the Zoology and Anatomy collections belonging to The Hunterian. The post also undertakes and promotes research and other scholarly initiatives on these collections and engages in teaching, learning and public engagement activity.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
- To ensure that the collections are efficiently managed, documented and interpreted for their long-term well-being.
- To undertake, facilitate and collaborate in innovative research in the Hunterian Zoology and Anatomy collections and to participate actively in international scholarship relating to these collections the post-holder will be required to write up research findings for publication in leading peer-reviewed journals and through other appropriate media [average 20% of time jointly devoted to research/teaching activity].
- To acquire and update subject related knowledge and provide as appropriate, expert advice to UoG and related organisations on matters pertaining to the collections, and to participate in national and international activities related to the collections.
- To engage with faculty in the relevant Schools and Colleges across the University, maintaining existing relationships and initiating new ones in order to develop and deliver innovative and multi-disciplinary collections-based teaching and research programmes.
- To work with the Curators for Entomology and Science and Medical History Collections, to develop new strategies for the future conservation, display and interpretation of the Zoology and Anatomy collections; to participate in public engagement and knowledge exchange programmes, using the collections in innovative ways, collaborating with colleagues/researchers as required.
- To facilitate physical, digital and intellectual access to the collections for HE and other groups and to encourage use of the collections by the widest possible learning audiences, including dissemination though exhibition, digital media and other means. This will include contributions to ongoing digitisation programmes in relation to content management systems, in discussion and collaboration with Hunterian or other colleagues, and for the zoology material in particular to feed collection data to appropriate global aggregators.
- To assist in the development of the collections in accordance with The Hunterian's strategic development plans.
- To identify potential sources of funding and secure such funds through grant applications as appropriate, either as an individual or team member and to manage resources effectively and be accountable for their use in relation to the collection.
