Collections Assistant (Earth Collections)
Reporting to the Head of Earth Collections, we require a Collections Assistant with experience of working in natural history collections is required for a one-year full-time post within the Earth Collections of the Oxford University Museum of Natural History.
The post holder must have experience of working with geological collections and will work as part of a team to carry out collections-related tasks as and when required, including assisting with loan processes, dealing with enquiries and facilitating visits to the collections. The post holder will also work with the Collections Managers in Earth Collections to help deliver strategic projects, including the main court redisplay programme.

Curator of Zoology and Anatomy
Job Purpose
To develop, care for, encourage and facilitate the use and interpretation of the Zoology and Anatomy collections belonging to The Hunterian. The post also undertakes and promotes research and other scholarly initiatives on these collections and engages in teaching, learning and public engagement activity.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- To ensure that the collections are efficiently managed, documented and interpreted for their long-term well-being.
- To undertake, facilitate and collaborate in innovative research in the Hunterian Zoology and Anatomy collections and to participate actively in international scholarship relating to these collections the post-holder will be required to write up research findings for publication in leading peer-reviewed journals and through other appropriate media [average 20% of time jointly devoted to research/teaching activity].
- To acquire and update subject related knowledge and provide as appropriate, expert advice to UoG and related organisations on matters pertaining to the collections, and to participate in national and international activities related to the collections.
- To engage with faculty in the relevant Schools and Colleges across the University, maintaining existing relationships and initiating new ones in order to develop and deliver innovative and multi-disciplinary collections-based teaching and research programmes.
- To work with the Curators for Entomology and Science and Medical History Collections, to develop new strategies for the future conservation, display and interpretation of the Zoology and Anatomy collections; to participate in public engagement and knowledge exchange programmes, using the collections in innovative ways, collaborating with colleagues/researchers as required.
- To facilitate physical, digital and intellectual access to the collections for HE and other groups and to encourage use of the collections by the widest possible learning audiences, including dissemination though exhibition, digital media and other means. This will include contributions to ongoing digitisation programmes in relation to content management systems, in discussion and collaboration with Hunterian or other colleagues, and for the zoology material in particular to feed collection data to appropriate global aggregators.
- To assist in the development of the collections in accordance with The Hunterian's strategic development plans.
- To identify potential sources of funding and secure such funds through grant applications as appropriate, either as an individual or team member and to manage resources effectively and be accountable for their use in relation to the collection.
HOPE for the Future Learning Officer (2 posts)
The Museum of Natural History is embarking on an ambitious project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) to deliver a plan of activity to safeguard the British Insect Collection and use it to inspire the public. The project is called HOPE for the Future: Heritage, Outreach and Preservation of Entomology.
The museum wishes to appoint two learning experienced officers to work with the existing learning team to deliver significant components of the NLTF activity plan. The project will develop and deliver an ambitious level of working in the community including a significant schools outreach programme, with a focus on schools in areas of disadvantage, and will establish an out-of-school engagement programme for young people, allowing extended engagement with the collections and the museum.
The Learning Officers will be responsible for delivering a demanding schools outreach programme, with a focus on delivering Insect Discovery Days, based on the CREST framework, allowing students to gain a recognised certificate as part of their experience of engaging with heritage.

The State Natural History Museum of the 3Landesmuseen in Braunschweig is offering a permanent full-time position (39.8 hrs/week).
Zoological taxidermist/preparator, specializing in mammals (m/f/d)
Responsibilities:
The position is based in the vertebrate collection and exhibit of the State Natural History Museum (SNHM) and includes the following specific tasks:
• independent planning and realization of zoological taxidermy and conservational work for specific scientific problems and exhibition projects
• independent planning, realization and documentation of complex conservation and restoration of unique historical specimen and type specimen
• monitoring of and care for the collections and exhibits, especially of the dioramas, also including object loans, and with attention to preventative conservation and Integrated Pest Management
• digitization of the collection, participation in the setup and maintenance of the database
• participation in installation and de-installation of exhibitions
• participation in emergency planning
• passing on knowledge in training and further education
• preparation and execution of activities in education, exhibitions and public relations
Qualifications
Required education and experience:
• degree or vocational training in zoological taxidermy/preparation, preparation technician or equivalent. Applications are also accepted if degree is only earned in 2020.
• thorough and comprehensive knowledge of and practical experience in all established preservation and preparation methods and techniques for vertebrates
• expert knowledge of and practical experiences in the restoration and repair of historical, often contaminated, specimen
• expert knowledge of anatomy and morphology of vertebrates
• general knowledge of taxonomy and vertebrate systematics
• thorough expert knowledge of and practical experience in handling natural history collections, including their scientific use, conservational standards, laws and regulations
• thorough knowledge of workplace safety regulations
• good foreign language skills, especially German and English
• familiarity with database systems
• knowledge of and experience in handling optical equipment (microscopes, scanners, photo- and digitization stations)
• valid driver’s license
• physical fitness as well as above-average craftsmanship

Librarian
The African Natural History Research Trust (ANHRT) is a charitable research trust and museum focused on African entomological biodiversity. Our research is aimed at increasing the scientific knowledge of African insects with an emphasis on Lepidoptera.
We are looking for an experienced full-time librarian who will support the arrangement, cataloguing and use of the archives held at ANHRT. The archive contains a variety of formats including volumes, loose papers, plans and maps, illustrations and photographs, including photographic slides and negatives.
It is essential that you have an ability to lift, carry and move collection material using trolleys, kick stools and lifts on a regular basis, e.g. to move items from stacks to shelves. There will be a frequent need to carry items upstairs.
Due to the location of ANHRT you must have a full driving licence and your own car.

Dorset Museum closed in October 2018 for a £15 million pound redevelopment. Complete with new galleries, a learning centre, collections storage, a library and visitor facilities the new Museum will become a cultural destination at the heart of Dorset's community.
Owned and managed by the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society, the Museum is an independent museum, receiving financial support from Dorset Council. Open to anyone with an interest in Dorset's past to join, the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society (DNHAS) is an educational charity with around 2000 members.
The new Dorset Museum will open in Summer 2020 with ambitions to welcome 100,000 visitors a year.
Main Purpose of Post:
The Development and Membership Assistant will support the delivery and administration of the DNHAS fundraising strategy, its membership scheme, membership recruitment, cultivation, activities and stewardship.

Natural History Collections Assistant

The Service
Portsmouth Museums & Visitor Services is responsible for the care of the city's museum collections and for making them accessible to both residents and visitors. The service operates six museum and heritage sites across the city - Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery, The D-Day Story, Portsmouth Natural History Museum, Charles Dickens' Birthplace Museum, Southsea Castle and Eastney Engine Houses. We deliver activities and projects to engage and inspire a range of audiences and involve them in the development and delivery of the service.
What is the role?
The purpose of the role is to assist in the delivery of 'Wild about Portsmouth', a HLF funded project. You will assist the Curator of Natural History in helping to make the collection accessible for display, events and research. They will work alongside museum staff, stakeholders and volunteers to help develop and promote our natural history collections.
You will contribute to social media postings, update museum records, rehousing and reorganising collections as well as uploading images on Modes Complete (Museums database). The post holder will be responsible for contributing to the development of the Wild About Portsmouth activity plan and will work with volunteers and work experience student as necessary.

The successful candidate will have strong IT skills with experience of working with Microsoft Office applications, databases and using social media in a professional manner. Assistant Curator (Entomology)
Are you interested in promoting a women-in-science agenda using museum entomology collections?
Leeds Museums and Galleries seeks to appoint an enthusiastic Assistant Curator with a specialism in entomology to assist us in delivering the Museums Association Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund ‘Dead Inspiring’ project.
The Assistant Curator will support the care, curation and interpretation of this important part of our Designated Natural Science collection as well as facilitating access to it for a wide range of audiences. In particular to Assistant Curator will help promote the women in science agenda by engaging girls and young women with the entomology collection, including working with volunteers. We are specifically looking for someone who will be able to inspire young women to embrace science and entomology and help them take their study of this subject further post-GCSE.
The post holder will work closely with the Curators of Natural Science and with colleagues across Leeds Museums and Galleries to maximise the impact of our collections and the experience of our audiences.
This post is funded by the Museums Association Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund and is a fixed-term appointment for 3 years.

The post-holder will act as Curator for Zoology, and have day-to-day responsibility for the zoological collections in the Museum, along with a second zoology curator already in post. This includes the identification, classification and organisation of specimens. All stages in accession are the responsibility of the Curator – from field collection, acquisition, purchase, data collection, numbering, registration, preparation of catalogues, and production of scientific and popular publications.
The applicant will also be responsible for maintenance of exhibits at the National Museum of Ireland – Natural History, Merrion Street, Dublin 2, development of temporary exhibitions, delivery of aspects of public programmes in relation to education and learning, and provision of a zoological enquiries service for the general public and for researchers. The Natural History Museum is scheduled to undergo major refurbishment in 2020-2024 and this project will be a significant task for all staff of the Natural History Division in coming years.
Curator (District Superintendent)
The National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin is Ireland’s leading botanical and horticultural institution, which cultivates a comprehensive collection of plants for scientific research, conservation, education and display.
The National Botanic Gardens within The Office of Public Works (OPW) manages the National Botanic Gardens, Kilmacurragh Arboretum in Co. Wicklow and the John F. Kennedy Arboretum in Co. Wexford as an integral part of the National Botanic Gardens.
Reporting to the Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for the daily management and development of the horticultural collection of the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, Kilmacurragh and the John F. Kennedy Arboretum in New Ross as well as managing and leading the directly employed OPW workforce. S/he will also be responsible for assisting the Director with the budgeting, workforce planning, management and safety of staff and visitors at these three sites.
The successful candidate will hold a qualification at Level 7 or higher, on the National Framework of Qualifications in an appropriate subject, e.g., Horticulture, Botany or a related discipline and will have experience in the supervision or management of a plant collection, botanic gardens or arboretum as well as administrative experience in the running of a significant maintenance and works organisation.
