Assistant Collections & Learning Curator (Natural Sciences)

Deadline: Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - 00:00
Employer: Colchester & Ipswich Museums
Contract Duration: Fixed term contract for three years
Contract Type: Full Time
Salary: £20,0043 to £23,574

Do you have a passion for the natural world? Are you looking for a new challenge and chance to develop your skills? Could you help us unlock the hidden stories of our museum collections?

This is an exciting time to join our Museum Service as major developments of our museums are changing the cultural landscape of Colchester and Ipswich. Supported by a grant from the John Ellerman Foundation, the service has created an opportunity for an emerging natural scientist. This funding offers a new role for those interested in developing curatorial skills, working with nationally significant natural science collections and engaging our audiences with stored specimens.

The 3-year funded Assistant role presents a unique opportunity to work with two experienced natural science curators, as part of a wider team of dynamic museum professionals across two towns. Developing skills of the modern curator, this role also involves public engagement, showcasing outcomes of the project through exhibitions, events and digital platforms.

We welcome applicants who can demonstrate a passion for natural sciences and unlocking their stories through creative communication. The role does not require previous heritage employment or museum qualification, but knowledge of, and enthusiasm for the natural world is essential.

Over the three years, the post holder will be based for five month periods, alternating between Colchester and Ipswich.

Short-listed candidates will be invited to an assessment day at a museum in Colchester or Ipswich on Thursday, 16 August.
